The Mission Statement
The Spiritual Workers Association is a not-for-profit self regulating
organisation whose primary aim is to Define, Promote and Protect Excellence in
the Field of Spiritual Work and to ensure that all its members adhere to the
highest possible standards. Its secondary aim is to create an informed and
educated public to reduce vulnerability to deceptive practices by those who are
fraudulent.
All spiritual workers need to have a recognised voice and the best way to
achieve this is to work together and become our own governing body. We are
proud to be spiritual workers. Now is the time to stand up and say so.
The SWA is the umbrella group that is bringing spiritual
organisations and independents together to form this governing body. Although
the SWA is itself a new organisation, its member organisations have been
established for many years. The SWA is already more representative of all
spiritual workers than any other organisation in the world. This is our
opportunity to help change the face of spiritual work in the UK, to afford us
the respect we deserve and to ensure we are a force to be reckoned with.
Membership is FREE and open to all spiritual workers and partnership
organisations, both in Britain and the world, who are happy to abide by the
standards and conditions as drawn up and agreed by the members and therefore
defined by the association. Members of the public who support the aims and
objectives of the SWA can also join. Members are in the process of drawing up
guidelines for all spiritual disciplines and will be able to vote on these and
all major issues. Because this is a member led organisation most of the
information is on the members' side. This includes all the draft guidelines, code
of conduct, selections of disclaimers, discussions and access to SWA insurance.
The association’s membership list will also be available to the public to
enable them to find spiritual workers who they know are committed to high
standards.
The guidelines are for individual members who do not belong to any other
organisations. If you already belong to another organisation you will already
have your own guidelines. Partnership Organisations are autonomous and will
already have their own guidelines.
The Law and You
As soon as money or gifts change hands it becomes a contract between you
and the person who has paid the money or goods. You then come under the new
Consumer Protection Regulations. This means that you have to deliver exactly
what you say. Individual Trading Standards Offices will also be able to
interpret the guidance how they see fit. This means, in the event of a
complaint, that the outcome may well depend on the views of the person
investigating the complaint.
Many Spiritualist churches believe the new regulations will not affect
them because they work on donations. Providing they only hold their services
and do not hold any other events where they charge people then they are right.
However, if they hold any other events where they do charge money they
will then come under the new regulations. These include, but are not limited
to, psychic Suppers, clairvoyant evenings, workshops or development groups
and Mind Body and Spirit Fairs where private readings are offered, even if it
is for charity. If free healing is offered as part of the the price of entrance
then that too may cause problems. The following is an extract from one Trading
Standards Office's interpretation of the new legislation:
By using the words heal or healer you are suggesting that you can
cure, this is not an acceptable term within the new legislation unless you can
give proof of such claims. Anecdotal evidence on your abilities is now not
enough, you will need to be able to justify any claim you are making.
The SNU are advising that the use of disclaimers could protect you in the
event of legal action being taken against you. These are available for SNU
members to use. However, the use of disclaimers has not yet been proven to be a
legally effective defense and it would seem that until someone is taken to
court we will not know how effective a defense this will be. But if you would
feel more comfortable using disclaimers then there are a selection of
disclaimers on the members’ side that are free for members to download and use
if they so wish.
It has also been claimed by some organisations that the only way to
protect yourself from the new regulations is to join them. This is not the
case. Whether you join an organisation is entirely up to you. It is probably
advisable to take out some insurance as many churches and centres may now
insist on their mediums having this before asking them to work in their
premises. You may find this easier and more reasonably priced if you do join an
organisation but there are a number of organisations from which to make your
choice and no one organisation has the monopoly on what is and is not
acceptable with insurance companies. Most insurance companies will want to see
some kind of certificate for healing therapies but not for mediumship. It will
be dependant on the person adhering to the Code of Conduct of that particular
organisation.
There are also those who consider that because they are genuine they have
nothing to fear. Unfortunately that is not always the case. It is worth bearing
in mind that Trading Standards have told us that they receive more complaints
from traders about the public than they do from the public about traders!
Unfortunately we live in a litigious society and there are people who earn
their living from suing others. The concern with the new legislation is that
mediums, however genuine, will be perceived as an easy target.
The SWA believe that rather than running scared and allowing others to
tell us what we can think and believe there is another way. As mediums and
healers, we believe we are communicating with Spirit. We do not
believe we are conducting a scientific experiment nor do we believe we are the
entertainment. To have to stand up and say so is a denial of our beliefs. It is
also sending out a message to the public that we do not believe what we are
saying and doing.
If we don’t have the courage to stand up and say
that we believe what we are doing then how can we expect the public to take us
seriously?
We believe that we should simply explain that those attending
demonstrations or sittings have made a personal choice to do so. They are
responsible for any decisions they choose to make as a result of the reading or
demonstration. That way we are also explaining the beginning of spiritual
philosophy and helping to educate that person so they are less likely to be
conned by those who are not genuine.
We believe that all spiritual workers need to have a recognised voice,
one that campaigns on their behalf and protects them and the public.
The Spiritual Workers Association is
campaigning for new legislation that recognises genuine mediumship and protects
spiritual workers from discrimination and abuse. As a member led
organisation we are also campaigning to be the code sponsor (government
recognised self regulating body) for the spiritual sector.

A Letter from The Spiritual Workers Association - 27 May 2008
I print this for you to see that the good work is carried on throughout the world !
http://www.theswa.org.uk/
Hi All,
First of all I would like to welcome all the new members who have
joined since last week. For those who don’t know we now have more than
1000 individual members which is incredible.
Partnership Organisations
We would also like to welcome two new Partnership Organisations and their representatives:
The Friendly Group are spiritual healers representing 13 healing
associations with over 2,500 members throughout the UK. Their
representative on the Management Round Table is Margaret Sharp-Ladd.
E.C.H.O is the European Confederation of Healing Organisations, an
umbrella organisation that covers 6 main organisations across 4
countries. They have 26,000 plus members across Europe including UK
Healers and AHA in the UK. Their representative on the Management Round
Table is Michael Baker.
If you would like to know more about these organisations please have a
look on the Partners page on the website [google the title] where you will be to find their website
addresses.
Regional Organisers (RO)
We would also like to welcome two new Regional Organisers. Isabel
Blanco has kindly volunteered to be the RO for the Netherlands, and
Adela Osterloh has kindly volunteered to be the RO for the British
Overseas Territories.
Ian has begun adding the Regional Organisers for other countries to the Regional Organiser page.
If your country does not yet have a Regional Organiser and you are
interested, please email us through the contact form on the website.
The New Freedom Campaign (For new members details are on the Home Page)
The hard copy petition is now available to download from the Home Page.
We are still waiting for the E-petition to go live. As soon as this
happens we will post the link. The closing date will be 1 year from the
date the E- petition goes live.
The third draft of the Mediums’ guidelines are now on the website. The
closing date for voting is 15th June '08. I have also updated the Law and
You page and added some information about Trading Standards to the
Articles page.
Finally I would like to end with what I consider to be the quote of the
week from one of our new members. Thank you Graham – I hope you don’t
mind me using this but it was so good I had to share it.
Quote of the week
‘A further thought on the Mediums/Psychics nonsense, re: new legislation
and having to say 'we are doing things for entertainment value only
is - when anyone is asked a question which they do not want to
answer - say in court or to a TV journalist - they can now say...
"As a
qualified Medium and Psychic, I am obliged to inform you that my answer
to your question will be for entertainment purposes only."
