Why Study?
Indeed, why Study and take exams in the subject of Healing or anything else to do with Spiritualism?
Healing is actually viewed as quite different to clairvoyance or philosophy by a lot of people; probably because they are different in so much that the types of energies used are diametrically opposed, i.e. either active or passive, and this is not fully understood.
Yet they are related because all of them are mediumship, but strangely, healing is often seen as the ‘poor relation’, most likely the lack of praise or appreciation for healers, is sadly a factor here whereas we all know that one can feed the ego regardless of actual facts!
Healers are the most taken for granted group of people in the system, so please do your best to send love and light to all concerned be they in material or the etheric.
This paper is written to counteract an argument, in ignorance or otherwise, by those speaking against training as being unnecessary for healers, this is often couched in a veil of an egotistical accusation. When asked by those who are questioning, “Why study and take exams for the subject of Spiritual Healing?” It is not enough when we reply that we seek help and enlightenment! We need to look at the greatest healers for the reasons, like Harry Edwards for example, who knew his guides and worked tirelessly in many areas of Spiritualism. More about him in the 'expert opinion' below.
DEFINATION
Let us first define our subject.
Healing is a vocation; this means that reward of any kind is not a first consideration; because of this, the kind of person who is attracted to becoming a healer is of essence by his or her own nature a devoted self-effacing person. Although healing for the medium is a natural, [we could say un-intentional] ‘by-product’, self-healing cannot be an end in itself, so is obviously non egotistical, this is important to note because they are so often accused of acting from this stance. And thus the argument regarding ego, it is not natural to the healer and it cannot be served.
LEARNING
A small point here regarding learning as a part of progression. Love is the universal energy that made all, and continues to charge it with the energy needed to maintain it. Energy is used to heal, the absence of same means that nothing can happen. To progress is to utilize that love from spirit to draw oneself onwards to the ultimate goal, which is reunion with the Godhead Who, is Love.
RESPONSIBILITY
Nobody slides unknowing into becoming a healing medium, we know this because of the 5th principle of personal responsibility where we must always chose a course of action, [and particularly spirit cannot make us do anything.]
CONTRACTS
So what did you actually undertake when you first consented to spirit and become a healer? Did you put any provisions on your services? Did you make an agreement with conditions?
No, love is unconditional and the ‘contract’ is made with love. Healing is love personified.
Well then, to be a healer means you have devoted yourself to a higher spiritual force, in other words God.
Mediums are conductors or conducers to the energies forming naturally in the universe, so we are not always needed in the same ways all the time.
PROGRESSION
Another point being made here is we are all on a path of progression, not just in order to assist them in the best possible way do spirit doctors and nurses want, and indeed need, us to progress, but to do otherwise means that conversely when we obstruct this natural progression we are going against the grand design, against God and so also their spiritual wishes, which can only be to our own detriment.
ARGUMENTS
Over the years the reasons given to me against any necessity for this ‘odd behavior’ of wanting to study were as follows.
- The spirit people do the healing.
- Healing is only passive mediumship, so we cannot actually do anything!
- Spirit doctors and nurses do not need anything from us.
- Why should superior spirit entities need an inferior physical person to assist them?
- One can either do it or not!
- A good healer is born not made.
Answers on a post card please… Seriously though, I feel that there is always the veiled suggestion that any studying was actually at best presumption and at worst egotistical.
The same argument is used against the benefits of studying the other spiritual subjects too. Although the thought of standing up and embarrassing ones self in public is a detriment to actually prohibiting studying the subjects of Clairvoyance or Inspired Philosophy altogether!
OPPOSITION
The opposition to any education is always found to come from the uneducated. This is not a play on words, it is a fact, but it might not be apparent that the speaker is uneducated because the ego is very clever in hiding ignorance. Now, these comments are not in any way intended to be aimed at the under-privileged, but most certainly are aimed at the intentionally ignorant, those whose stance is plainly that their ego is all they need to substantiate any argument against improvement of the self. Ego does not like to feel in any way inferior so fights to prohibit that situation. The lower self is uplifted through humility and service to others; this means that spiritual matters are diametrically opposed to the ego.
EXPLANATION
If you are thrown at this arguments thrown at us by the egotist, and feel at a loss to explain, perhaps like myself you are thinking that knowledge is better than ignorance, then counteract the dangerous thoughts with this…it is so easy to dispel with the wealth of books written on the subject, isn’t it? Could laziness be a factor here? And a good question is “What was Harry Edwards doing all those years, nothing at all?”
EXPERT OPINION
Then I saw this in one of his many books, and it started to be simpler.
I paraphrase here;
“Healers who possess knowledge of the faculty of co-operation with the bodily intelligences fulfill a greater purpose in the healing act.
They are conscious collaborators, acting in an additional positive manner.
With unity of purpose a greater quickening is achieved.
Attunement is acceptance and co-operation.
We should not limit the extent of help that may be given by the bodily intelligence or methods by which it can be used. Talk to the ‘helpers’.”
THE REPLY
My guides and helpers always encouraged me in progression and learning, so now the reply to this problem is as follows:-
“Any information / knowledge that can be obtained helps me in my work as a healer, it is of benefit to those I serve in the physical and the spiritual realms. [They are in progression too.]
We are not indulging in a hobby, or joining an exclusive club.
We are called to a vocation, healing is an art and a science and a partnership.
Any vocation is not conscripted, we are all volunteers, and as such are beholden to the spirit realms for this opportunity, for their choice in taking us on as helpers is showing confidence in us, that we will do our work to the best of our capabilities.”
WHO HELPS WHOM?
Anyway, is the point being missed when it is argued that they do not need us, for surly it is we who need the experience and should be glad of the opportunity they give us to progress through service of any kind?
TO RECAP
By definition the people who become healers are self-effacing non-egoistic volunteers, and they as others have a responsibility to learn, and it is all our duty to progress on life’s path to the best of our ability. The opposition arguments come from ignorance where at best it could be considered a disadvantaged position and at worst a bad attack of ego-tripping and jealousy.
The wealth of information from experts in the field of spiritual healing urges us to stand up and be heard to say that;
We owe it to our guides helpers and all the hosts of Angels to do the best we can for mutual service in love, for love is the only thing that makes existence possible, and at times perhaps bearable.
THE HEALER’S PRAYER
Lord help me to help others,
that so doing I might serve with a glad heart.
