I notice that the auto-phone number programme has taken the ISBN numbers as phone numbers in some places - please ignore!
READING FOR ALL / BOOK LIST - 1688 hits on this page to date July '08 - 518 average per year - so pass it on.
Now it's gone up to 2244 May 2009, that's 556 in 8 months - Brilliant.
This list has been devised on the request of my students, and it should be reading for pleasure, not just for teaching purposes, also of course for Awareness and Development Teaching!
Some of these are only bought as antiques on the 'Alibris' or 'Cygnus' web site where there is a section of ‘find by author/title’, and there are many others sites just type in keywords ‘find book’ if there is any difficulty at your nearest decent bookshop. The IBSN is a number to order a book with - usually means its still in print...... I believe there are two kinds for America and UK... so type in all the details too when searching.
******************
1. First on my list…“Hints on Mediumistic Development” and “Hints on Spiritual Unfoldment" by Ursula Roberts, who was a Christian lady. A ‘must’ for anybody interested in awareness and developing personal skills in Spiritualism. No IBSN number - Only 4s 6d in the old days! I obtained this from an antique book site so look on the Web Link page for the Antique book sites.
2. Any of Silver Birch’s books, particularly “The Silver Birch Anthology” for a good start in the reading dept, both spiritual upliftment and calming. I recommend all these books to my healing patients for reading before going to sleep; re-read time after time, philosophy at it’s best.
3. Any of White Eagle’s famous books “The Gentle Brother”- “Golden harvest” Again I recommend all these books for reading before sleeping, to get a good nights spiritual healing! By The White Eagle Publishing Trust, Hampshire. A branch in the north at Rawdon, Leeds.
4. As above, “The Spiritual Unfoldment” Volumes 1 to now 5, I am recently told. I'm told this series is recently rewritten & published so you will be able to order from the local shop. By The White Eagle Publishing Trust, Hampshire.
5. “Why on Earth” Joan Hodgson IBSN number is 0 85487 043 1. A Christian Spiritualist book, karma, opportunity, and freewill are explained.
6. A very nice GIFT - “The Boy who saw true” Cyril Scott. Non-fiction. ISBN 0 85435 493 X. A remarkable, interesting, and entertaining book for helping the beginner to understand the spirit world through a child’s experiences!
7. “The Autobiography of Emma Hardinge Britten” SNU Publications ISBN 0902 036 08 4. Witty and a darn good read, a modest lady, no ego-trip here.
8. “Reminiscences - A lifetime of Spiritualism” By Ursula Roberts. Very funny in places, a good read, how glad I am not to have these travel problems of a by-gone age!
9. “Excursions to the Spirit World” author: Frederick C Sculthorp. ISBN: 0900413298. A fascinating good read.
10. “Ena Twigg Medium” ISBN 0 352 30015 9. A lovely, modest, down to earth interesting lady.
11. Regarding the TITANIC ....“The Blue Island” subtitled “Experiences Of A New Arrival Beyond The Veil” Communicated by W. T. Stead: Recorded by Pardoe Woodman and Estelle Stead: There is a letter of introduction by the famous Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. This book has much to commend it, not least the historical interest of the experience of the ‘Titanic’. Stead is himself an important and interesting figure historically too.
12. “Spiritualism in the Evolution of Religion” Ernest Thompson FSNU. Not a stuffy book, putting Spiritualism into context historically. First published in 1953. Many other books by the same author. You want the Psychic Book Club on a search for this.
13. “The Spirit Book” by Alan Kardec. A compilation of spirit teachings from different beings of the highest degree, for the basis of establishing a rational philosophy. I found it to be answering the questions we ask ourselves in our quiet moments. You can get this on the 'Adobe Reader' for free! at this site...http://www.sgny.org/main/Books/Genesis_SAB_Dec_03.pdf
14. “The History of Spiritualism” ISBN 0 85384 079 2. Psychic Press By the famous author of the Sherlock Holmes books, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who was a personal friend of the also famous magician Houdini. Did you know that they both started out to disprove Spiritualism and ended up the greatest supporters? Spirit at work there methinks!
15. For photographs of phenomena “This is Spiritualism” Maurice Barbanell. ISBN 0 85384 108 X. Not hard to read, a textbook for the serious student who has questions about anything to do with Spiritualism.
16. “On remembering Past Lives” ISBN 0 85030 862 3. And there are many other books by Edgar Cayce [ 1877 to 1945 ] which are given from spirit through this simple man whilst in deep trance; this was his life work, fascinating! One book deals with the healing aspect, and has prescriptions for ailments made of very simple things mostly of which are very accessible too! His life story also makes fascinating reading. Just type in his name for a web site, and you will be spoilt for choice.
17. “The Mediumship of Jack Webber.” By the famous healing medium and President of the National Federation of Spiritualist Healers, Harry Edwards. 1962. The Healer Publishing Co Ltd, Burrows Lea, Shere, Guilford, Surrey. THE PHOTOGRAPHS IN THIS BOOK ARE AMAZING!

19. THE SIGNPOST - This is it! A paperback book to take anywhere on holiday and find a Spiritualist Church - SUPER! We use it on holiday to visit churches all over the country. ISBN 0 9533497 0 5
20. "Harry Edwards, the Life Story of the Great Healer" by Ramus Branch. The author traces the Healer's family background and rumbustious childhood, through to his early working life as printer into which blended a stormy political career, that, in itself, was to prove but a forerunner of the true work awaiting him. This equipped him for the battles of the future with the Church and Medicine when his cherished mission so spiritual healing came under attack. Not sure if this is to order at a decent bookshop.
21. Of interest to the men in my family are these two books - you can see why by the author ... "Many Mansions" by Air Chief Marshal Lord Dowding, he says in his introduction that the book is written by an ordinary man for ordinary men, and I do believe this. Go to ALIBRIS book search for this as it's very old.
22. "The Lychgate" as above - the second book which is written after a lot more knowledge has been assimilated by this wonderful man. Absolutely fascinating! Do read them in order if you can.
23. “Meditation” by Grace Cook 1892 – 1979 a Christian lady of great learning, any of her books are so beautiful. ISBN 0 85487 011 3. This book is for the student who has any or no experience of meditation, and the Christian background is helpful. Search on the 'White Eagle Trust' site.
2008:
24. "Using your brain for a Change" by Richard Bandler. ISBN 0-911226-27-3. This is a very interesting book about the way we think, I have found it most useful for helping in dealing with people and understanding the way I think too! Illustrations are giving a light tone to this quite serious subject, Richard Bandler is the 'guru' of NLP [Neuro Linguistic Programming]
25. "Life Between Lives" - By Michael Newton PhD also "The journey of souls" & "Destiny of Souls". Well, what can I say - this book blew my mind! This extraordinary man has been taking people back through past lives and into the spirit world for 40, yes 40 years! As an hypnotherapist so many people ask me about this interesting subject... read the review in Generl Knowledge ...
HEALING BOOKS TO READ
For students of SPIRITUALISM by Stella Rodgers C.S.N.U
This list has been devised on the
request of my students. I see it also for pleasure and not just for
teaching purposes, and for self-awareness / development too, so if
you are interested in finding out more and don't know where to start,
then just close your eyes, think of the spirit world, and say inside
your head, "Spirit friends please show me where to begin." And then read the list, OK? In book shops it works just as well too!
IBSN number after the title usually means its still in print, but I can't always find the numbers so they are bought as antiques on the 'Alibris' or 'Cygnus' web site - where
there is a section of ‘find by author / title’, and there are many
others sites; if there is any difficulty at your nearest decent
bookshop.
Another way to find a book on any subject is to go onto the google site and type in "Books for Dummies" ...!
Note from Stella: Problems with the typo when updating the site - sorry!
1. “Harry Edwards" the life story of the
greatest healer since the time of Christ, by Ramus Branch. Healer
Publishing Co Ltd, Burrows Lea, Shere, Guilford Surry, where the
sanctuary is located too.

3. "Hands of light" ISBN 0 553 05302 7 -
and “ Light Emerging" ISBN 0 553 35456 6 – by Barbara Ann Brennan.
Both these books are ‘bibles’ for the beginner on the journey of
exploration into healing, as you would expect the second follows on
from the first, but it’s important to get them the right way around!
4. “Health Healing And You" by Ursula
Roberts. Aquarian Press. I liked this book because it helps to
understand the theory of how we can bring onto the physical body our
own illnesses.

Tester. First printed 1970. SBN 257 65221 3. Personal experience of his
own healing and what followed to change his life. For the healer and
the layman alike.

Press 1942. VERY OLD so no IBSN number - and also “When Your Animal

other beliefs that we as spiritualists also agree with to a great
extent.

12. “Mary Baker Eddy" Her communications from beyond the grave to

whole subject in itself to be studied. This lady is very important in
the Theosophy Movement, and this book is a revelation. Spiritualism and
Theosophy parted company years ago and so this book stirred up a whole
mass of trouble at the time.
13. “Mysticism" Evelyn Underhill. ISBN
0525470735. [Subtitled “A study in the Nature and Development of Man’s
Spiritual Consciousness." ] This might be a bit heavy for the beginner!
